GLADWIN - Aug. 31, 2006 - Ogemaw Heights played a solid half of basketball at Gladwin on Thursday. A big play by Gladwin's Tonya Anderson turned the tide, and the Flying G's pulled away to a 51-30 victory in the second half.
Ogemaw led by as many as eight points early in the second quarter of what was Gladwin's opening game. With the score tied and time winding down toward the half, Anderson, a fourth-year starting point guard, passed out of a trap to an open teammate for a 3-pointer that snapped the tie for good.
"We might have been playing a little over our heads for a bit," said Ogemaw coach Tim Hanson. "We struggled with our shooting most of the night, but we'd hit a couple of shots in a row to take the lead.
"Anderson's play before halftime, we were a little slow on our defensive rotation and left someone open. The 3-pointer at the buzzer took the wind out of our sails and we came out flat in the second half."
The Falcons managed just seven points in the second half and Anderson scored about half of her 24 points in the fourth quarter as the G's pulled doubled their lead in the fourth quarter.
"The kids are working hard," Hanson said. "It's a delicate balance of trying to spend enough time working on our fundamentals, which are lagging a bit, and being a new coach installing new offenses and defenses."
Renee Wangler led the Falcons (1-1) with eight points. Ogemaw plays back-to-back
