SUTTONS BAY - June 11, 2005 - Whittemore-Prescott knew it would have its hands full when taking on defending state champion Gladstone in Saturday's regional semifinal.
Gladstone, it turned out, also had its hands full in playing W-P. The only thing separating the two teams were the ubiquitous "little things" that can come back to haunt a team.
Gladstone managed to defeat the Cards 1-0 despite picking up just one hit in the contest.
"I'm glad we were able to play this game," said W-P coach Sam Harrison. "I think we learned how little things make a big difference in a game against a great team like Gladstone."
The Braves picked up their only hit of the game in the fourth inning. K.C. Blahnik led off with a single, then went all the way to third on a wild pitch. An error on the throw back to pitcher Theresa Janish allowed Blahnik to score.
The Cards (29-10) were never able to advance a runner past second base despite getting singles from Janish, Anna Gordon and Andrea Rahkola.
Janish took the loss despite throwing a one-hitter and not walking a batter while striking out four.
"We had a lot of success this season," Harrison said. "With six starters returning we expect to be even more successful next season. Losing this game will only make us hungrier and tougher next season. The girls and coaches are already talking and looking forward to next year. " |
