W-P rebounds from loss to split with Glenn

JOHN GLENN - May 18, 2005 - Whittemore-Prescott bounced back from a first-game loss to John Glenn on Wednesday to earn a split in their final North East Michigan Conference doubleheader of the season. The Cards finish as the NEMC runners-up to Pinconning.

W-P lost the first game 2-1 but took the nightcap 13-7.

"We were not ready to play mentally," said W-P coach Sam Harrison of the opener. "It was a tough loss for Theresa (Janish). A walk and two outfield errors in the third cost us two runs."

The two unearned runs, combined with the Cards picking up just two hits, led to one of the Cards' more frustrating losses of the year.

"We just couldn't hit the ball," Harrison said. "Except for two singles, every ball we hit was a soft ground ball or a pop-up."

Janish took the loss despite giving up just six hits and one walk. Kaylon Leslie and Kelli Barriger had W-P's two hits.

The Cards built a 13-3 lead in the second game, then held on as Glenn scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh. But with five players picking up two hits apiece, W-P was able to put runs on the board in five of the game's seven innings.

"We just need to do the little things better, like swing at good pitches," Harrison said. "In the first game we were swinging at pitches in the dirt, (but) we were a little smarter in Game 2."

Barriger earned the victory, allowing six hits and two walks while allowing three earned runs and striking out two.

W-P improved to 23-4 (8-4) while Glenn finished 3-9 in league play.
