BOYNE CITY - April 30, 2005 - The Whittemore-Prescott softball team swept through three teams at the Boyne City Invitational on Saturday, ripping Boyne City 14-1 and Bellaire 20-2 before edging Maple City Glen Lake 2-0 for the tourney title. The three-game sweep kept the Cards unbeaten at 17-0.
Solid defense again backed up the stellar pitching of Theresa Janish and Kelli Barriger as the Cards committed just two errors in the three games, while catcher Sarah Leslie shut down opponents' running games by throwing out both steal attempts against the Cards on the day.
Janish allowed one unearned run on two hits while striking out 10 in the opener, walking none. The Cards ended the game early with a seven-run fifth inning that enacted the five-inning mercy rule. Kaylon Leslie had a single and a triple, picked up an RBI and scored two runs, while Annalise Gordon had two singles and scored three runs.
The fifth inning was again a big one for W-P against Bellaire as the Cards scored 10 runs in the 20-2 win. Kelli Barriger pitched four innings and allowed two hits, walking seven and striking out four. Julie Janish made her varsity pitching debut in relief, striking out two of the three batters she faced. Kaylon Leslie ahd two hits, three RBI's and three runs, while Theresa Janish drove in three runs and scored twice on two hits.
The Cards finally were challenged by Glen Lake in the championship contest. Gordon's two-out, bases-loaded single in the third inning scored Barriger and Julie Janish for the game's only runs. Glen Lake had the tying runs on first and third in the sixth inning, but Theresa Janish struck out the final batter to preserve the win. Janish hurled a complete-game four-hitter, striking out eight and walking none to go 9-0 on the season.
The Cards resume NEMC action on May 5 when they travel to Ogemaw Heights, then get their shot at defending state semifinalist Pinconning on May 9 at home. |
