Clutch hitting, defense propel W-P to sweep of Sanford-Meridian

SANFORD - April 21, 2005 - Clutch hitting and solid defense helped the Whittemore-Prescott softball team stay unbeaten Thursday as the Cards swept a doubleheader at Sanford-Meridian, 4-2 and 10-1.

"We scored a lot of runs with two outs today," W-P coach Sam Harrison said. "I am very satisfied with our ability to focus and come through in the clutch the last four games."

Theresa Janish allowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking one in the opener. The Cards took a 4-0 lead after four innings and held off Meridian rally as the Mustangs scored twice in the sixth.

Kaylon Leslie had two singles, drove in a run, scored a run and had a stolen base, while Kelli Barriger had a single, an RBI and a stolen base. Annalise Gordon, Melissa Perrin and Julie Janish each had singles.

In the second game, Barriger pitched a four-hitter, walking two and striking out six. The Cards broke open a 3-1 game with a seven-run sixth inning. Kristie Degesie had a double, a single and three RBI's to lead the offense, while Julie Janish, Theresa Janish and Sarah Leslie each had two hits apiece.

W-P committed just one error in the doubleheader, and Gordon twice threw out runners at first from right field to cap the Cards' best defensive effort of the season.

The Cards (12-0) return to NEMC play on Monday with a doubleheader at John Glenn.
