STANDISH-STERLING - April 18, 2005 - Standish-Sterling gave Whittemore-Prescott a challenge for awhile on Monday, but the Cardinals eventually showed why they are still unbeaten. Leading 4-2 at the start of the sixth inning of the opener, W-P scored 10 runs in the sixth for a 14-2 win and blanked the Panthers 10-0 in the second contest.
Kelli Barriger threw what coach Sam Harrison called her best game of the season, holding the Panthers to three hits while walking two and striking out 11.
"She had command of three different pitches," Harrison said.
W-P led 4-0 after four innings, but the Panthers but two unearned runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to make it close. The Cards responded with their double-digit inning to end the game by the mercy rule.
Barriger also scored three runs and drove in three more with a triple and a single; and Kaylon Leslie had a triple and a single and scored two runs, driving in two.
In the second game, W-P scored in every inning but the sixth to gradually pull away.
"We played good 'D,' Harrison said. "We didn't give our opponent extra chances.
"(It was) another strong performance by Theresa (Janish)," he added. "She walked more than we like but was tough every time runners advanced to second and third."
Janish hurled a complete-game shutout while walking four and striking out 11. Julie Janish had three hits while Sarah Leslie, Melissa Perrin and Theresa Janish added two hits apiece.
The Cards improved to 10-0 (4-0 NEMC) while SSC dropped to 3-3 (1-3). |
