Bobcats take control of NEMC soccer race

JOHN GLENN - April 20, 2005 - If the Tawas Area girls soccer team is going to win the North East Michigan Conference title this season, they have a little bit of ground to make up.

John Glenn solidified its lead atop the league Wednesday with a 4-2 victory over the Braves to remain the league's only unbeaten team, dropping Tawas two games off the Bobcats' pace. A Tawas victory would have forced a three-way tie with Ogemaw Heights atop the league.

"We are very disappointed," said Tawas coach Ken Cook. "I knew this game would be difficult. I wish we had won the coin toss so we could have taken the wind advantage (in the first half). I knew before the game that we needed to control the pace of play and get an early lead if we were going to be successful.

"Having the wind against us made that difficult."

Glenn bolted to a 3-0 lead at the half, then withstood the Braves' attempt to come back with the wind at their backs. Sarah Klenow's score two minutes into the second half cut it to 3-1, but despite a goal from Kadra Stec later in the half, Tawas was unable to catch the Bobcats despite dominating the second-half action. Stec also had an assist on Klenow's goal.

"I thought Katie Jacques played a great game for us on defense," Cook said. "Allie Tripi did a nice job at stopper and Kristine Jackson came off the bench and played aggressively at forward."

Tawas dropped to 4-2 overall, 3-2 in NEMC play, while Glenn improved to 4-0 atop the league.
