Ogemaw Heights alumni report

Last weekend Matt Miller, Spring Arbor College, had a bit of a break through in the pole vault.  He was at his league meet and cleared 14’ 1” and had some really promising attempts at 14’ 7”.  He was fourth .  This is his best ever and gives him hope to qualify for NAIA Nationals and break the school record.  He has two meets left to accomplish this.

Big news from Steve Manz:  “Well, it's official!  I will be the new throws coach for men's and women's track and field at McNeese State University (Louisiana).  I'm heading down on May 20th to continue training for this year.  The job starts on July 1st.  I am really excited.  My personal coach is the head coach and he is an extremely motivated man.  The program is going to become much better and I know we will surprise a lot of people.  I also have a lot of good athletes coming in.  Ty Sevin, the head coach, is recruiting like crazy.  Especially for the women's team as there are only eight girls on the team this year!  My throwing has been very inconsistent lately and I am in a rut.  The cold weather really harms my training for about a month every year and it is starting to get to me.  I am excited to get a full year of consistent training in.  I know that Ty and the other assistant coach, Jim Davis (an elite PVer with a PR of 19'), will keep me motivated while I live, coach, and train with them.  My last meet in Michigan this year will be at U of M this weekend.  Then I am off to Louisiana where I will compete at small meets in LA and TX until USA Nationals.  I will probably try to compete up here at least once or twice next year.”  Congrats to Steve on his first college coaching job.

Mat Lambourn competed in his conference meet this week and was pleased with the results.  The Alma College track team finished fourth in their league meet.  Mat says he had an up and down meet.  He made the finals in the 100 but was unhappy with his finals performance.  He ran the 200 with a very good time of 22.9 but did not make the finals.  The 4 x 100 team he was on ran its best and finished fourth at 43.5 and he had his best ever in the javelin at 152 feet but just missed the finals in that event, a very good meet indeed for Mat.

I know that Emory Nelkie’s season has ended at Lake Superior State University and he is home working on the farm and training for cross country in the fall.

I haven’t heard from Abigail Nelkie at North Carolina State University

It sound like we have 3 seniors hoping to add to the college ranks next year.  Matt Edwards and Lisa Brindley hope to compete in track at Alma College and Mike McGregor plans to compete at Central Michigan University next year.
