Ogemaw track alumni report

In late March, Abigail Nelkie, running for North Carolina State competed in the Raleigh Relays in the 10k (6.2 miles) and ran a personal best by over 2 minutes finishing in 36:15.47.  This is a very fine time and is about a minute off the pace required to provisionally qualify for the national meet.  She also ran her fast 5k in the first half of this race, hitting the half way point at 17:42.

On April 17, Matt Miller, vaulting for Spring Arbor College, competed at Taylor University and cleared 13’ 6” in the pole vault in competition.

Steve Manz, formerly of MSU and now competing unattached, was in Phoenix, Arizona on Friday and Saturday two weekends ago.  On Saturday he threw against Olympian Silver Medalist John Godina in the Sun Angel Classic at ASU.  Godina won the meet with a throw of 69'+.  Steve opened up at 62'1.25" on his first throw and then bombed a 66 footer with a small small toe foul.  After that, his balance became very poor and he threw 62'-63' fouls the rest of the way to finish 4th with 62'1.25".  He is very excited with his 2nd throw even though it was a foul.  It puts him so far ahead of where he was last year.  He could have stayed in had his balance in the back of the ring been a lot better.  But he always has balance issues this time of year so he is not worried.  He should be able to hit that 20 meter barrier soon (65'7") with 66' and 67' not far behind, he feels.

Abigail Nelkie ran in an another 10k race this past weekend, but was not pleased with the results.  The time was a lot slower than Raleigh Relays but the whole field was slow.  She finished about 15th, with a time around 37:30.  She hopes she will be racing in two weeks at Duke University in the 5K.

Mat Lambourn, running for Alma College, had the following to say about the start of his indoor season.

“We've had three dual meets in the last two weeks. Our team is so small that we cannot compete with Albion or Hope or Calvin, but we do have some talent in places allowing us to usually split the meet with the other team. For myself personally I have been frustrated with injuries, both my own and my teammates. At some point EVERY one of our sprinters has been injured and had to sit out a meet here and there, and we only have 4 total. Our 4x1 times have been slowly dropping as we have been getting people healthy again. In our meet at Calvin last Saturday we ran 44.1. My open 100 and 200 times are also finally starting to come around, I ran 11.03 in the 100 (2nd) and 22.8 in the 200 (3rd or 4th). Also I set a personal best two weeks ago in the javelin with a throw of 148 feet 3 inches.”
