ROGERS CITY – Jan. 29 2005 – The Oscoda volleyball team ventured north to one of the tougher weekends in the northern part of the state on Saturday, and after adjusting to the level of play in an opening-game loss finished the day by splitting with three other teams.
The Owls opened with the host Huron squad, which was ranked 10th in last week's Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Oscoda fell to Rogers City 7-25, 23-25. “After getting over the shell-shock of playing Rogers City in the first game of the tournament, we settled in and played some pretty good volleyball,” Oscoda coach Linda Hennigar said. “In the first game, Rogers' tall aggressive hitters took their toll on us and cruised to an easy win. “The second game we decided we, too, could hit the ball hard and won and played our best game of the season to almost upset the host team, losing that game by only two points.” The Owls followed that up by splitting matches with Petoskey (14-25, 26-24), Fife Lake-Forest Area (25-16, 22-25) and Cedarville (26-24, 22-25). In the Forest Area game, Oscoda played well to get the opening-game win but faltered defensively in the second game. Against Petoskey, the Owls bounced back from a first-game loss to come from behind in the second game for the win. Heather Davis served the final five points after taking over the serve with Oscoda down 24-21. Oscoda edged Cedarville in the first game but fell in a competitive second game to end the Owls' day. “Even though we did not advance out of pool play, I was pleased with our style of play throughout the day,” Hennigar said. “We played very well as a team and our defense worked hard to keep the ball off the floor on our side of the court. “This is a very competitive tournament with many fine volleyball teams. We were very competitive in all four of our matches. We didn't pick up any wins today but we only picked up one loss. At this tournament that is a good day for us.” |
