Family first: Ogemaw's Miller resigns hoops position |

OGEMAW HEIGHTS - March 18, 2005 - Jeff Miller knew he was going to have to make a change. With daughter Jessie playing college basketball at Hillsdale College, he and his wife Bunny were trying to play it both ways, chasing Jessie around the midwest while Jeff coached the Ogemaw Heights boys basketball team. When Bunny pulled into the driveway at 2 a.m. after one Hillsdale game, traveling alone because Jeff had an Ogemaw game that same night, he knew he would have to choose between the two. "It seemed that all of Jessie's biggest games came when Ogemaw had a game," he said. "And Bunny driving home by herself half the night, that's just not the way it's supposed to be." As a result, Miller stepped down after two years as the head coach of the Falcons' boys basketball team last week. "With the seasons being at the same time, it just wasn't working out," he said. "I just couldn't get back into coaching next year with all that going on. I'm awfully lucky to have a daughter playing college basketball. She has two years left; after that if I want to get back into coaching, we'll see." Miller's teams were 14-28 overall in his two seasons, including 8-12 in NEMC play. The Falcons won one district tournament game this season. At sophomore Hillsdale this season, Jessie started all 27 games for the 18-9 Chargers and earned second-team all-GLIAC South Division honors, scoring 9.3 points and 3.9 rebounds a game and leading the team with 49 steals. |
